Are We All Sad And Lonely?

The Vancouver Sun published This Story today....

So is this true?

I think he has a very biased idea and stereotypical idea of what blogging is.

Yes granted, there are probably a few lost souls out there.

But when I think of the mommy blogger conferences, get togethers, charity, and so on that have been born of the blogosphere....I think he may need to rethink his position.

Michael Keren, who has written Blogosphere: The New Political Arena,
suggests individuals who bare their souls in blogs are isolated and
lonely, living in a virtual reality instead of forming real
relationships or helping to change the world.

He also says...

Keren praises the Internet as a great place for self-expression, but he
also suggests that blogs often have the opposite effect by creating
feelings of loneliness for those who aren't lucky enough to reach
"celebrity" status.

And while I think this may be true for some and I am sure we all dream of being paid and famous bloggers in some form.....I think the majority blog for their own personal reason.....not massive sitemeter numbers.

Oh,... that's harsh!
I blog because I like to write my thoughts, ideas, woes, rants, etc... and really don't give a damn if I have an audience or not.
It actually helps me think, AND, as a writer, any form of 'writing' I do is good practice.

Oh - and I've made some really cool connections!

Ok I might be a bit of a loner but I do form relationships and I think blogs can if not change the world then help change someone's view of it and that is no small thing.

I have seen people get sad about not getting many hits but those are few and far between. I agree with you. I blog for my own personal reason and so do most of the people I know.

I think people make judgements like this to make themselves feel better. He's compensating for something, we just don't know what.

Wow, do you think he may have some issues about his own lack of celebrity in the blogosphere? I love posting on my blog, but I also have a VERY fufilling outside life! I am sure there are some people who have no other life.....but I feel like they are in the minority!

Your name caught my attention in another blog on which we both commented. Great blog!

For some I think it might be true in that they find they have time on their hands and use it as a form of entertainment. There have been times when I have felt my blog to be inadequate in comparison to some of the fabulous blogs out there, the creativity of the blogs and so on. But then I sit back and think...why do I blog...I blog for me...if people read it awesome if not...that is ok as well. I think he speaks some truths there...but remember it is the paper and hey I think that says it all......

Great topic...

Hmmm...my cyber blog friend and I have had the same discussion in my living room not too long ago. (yes, she and I actually met in person, because we "clicked" so well in real life). Both of us have busy, challanging carreers and a plethera of outside friends. We blog because it's liberating, and wonderful to be able to express yourself. It reduces stress, and it's safe. If someone doesn't like what you have to say, they don't have to read it anymore. I think we blog more for ourselves than any "celebrity" status in blog world.(although, as it happens, you end up with a community of readers, and it's great)

I read the article. I believe he wrote it without really ever having "blogged". That's why he doesn't get it. :-)

I think that my life would be fulfulled without Blogging. I just like to blog b/c it's more of a personal journal that I can look back on. If I've made some friends (like you) along the way then that's great. But, if it were to all go away today I would probably be lost for a while, but life would go on!

Couldn't read the article, but I get the point. I blog because I recently moved 800 miles from home. We have no friends here, so my blog is my only daily way of keeping in touch with the friends and family we left behind. I am lonely here, and my blog does provide me with 'someone to talk to'. But I don't shun people, and always attempt to have a real life. It's just nice to be able to put my thoughts somewhere other than just talking to myself in the car.
And I wouldn't want to be a celebrity blogger. Too much pressure. (although it would be nice to know that people are actually reading the blog...)

I am incredibly alone. I sit in front of the computer and imagine I am talking to friends, but in the end I know I am just looking at pixels. sigh.

Or....I might be writing and enjoying myself. Maybe I have a life beside the computer and the blog enriches that by giving me a little self expression.

Or...maybe I'm sitting naked except for the tinfoil cap on my head that I keep there to block the aliens from being able to read my mind.
